General Description

Gumla district was carved out of Ranchi district in May 1983. Gumla and Simdega are the two towns in the district which has 1398 villages. Gumla is covered by dense forests, hills and rivers. It has a highly undulating terrain. Nearly 70% of the population is tribal. Gumla is famous for a cattle fair held every Tuesday, which earlier was held annually and lasted a whole week. Paddy, mahua, pulses are the main crops. Vegetables are also grown in abundance. Industrial activity is limited to small scale units manufacturing candles, bidi and soap. Gumla has no direct rail link.
